ND Beijing and ND parents in China share a special message for Lunar New Year

Starting in 2021, Notre Dame Beijing launched a special series of traditional Chinese paintings that celebrate the zodiac signs. With the Lunar New Year approaching, ND Beijing created a message for the University of Notre Dame community to celebrate the Lunar New Year and the Year of the Snake, which is known in Chinese culture as a symbol of intelligence, wisdom, and charm.

This year, ND Beijing is excited to announce a unique collaboration with the ND Beijing Parents Committee to continue this series of traditional Chinese zodiac sign paintings. The artwork this year, integrating the art of traditional Chinese painting with calligraphy and seal cutting, was contributed by a talented ND parent, Ms. Xiaoyi Ning, and aims to capture the essence of the snake’s qualities and its cultural significance.

“2025 is the Year of the Snake in China, and the snake symbolizes boundless vitality and wisdom. As we embrace this vibrant and auspicious year, we present this Chinese painting—adorned with wisteria, a symbol of spring and hope—as a heartfelt wish for the Notre Dame community, may the year ahead be filled with fortune, harmony, and flourishing success,” shared Ms. Xiaoyi Ning, with her husband Mr. Gang Wu and her daughter Lingyun (Molly) Wu, who is a current ND undergraduate student.

Mr. Xiangdong Zhang, the President of ND Beijing Parents Committee added, “All ND parents in China would like to wish the professors and students of Notre Dame a happy Lunar New Year. May you practice the University's values and lead a more fruitful life throughout 2025. We welcome you to visit China!"

The Lunar New Year, known in China as the Spring Festival, starts this year on Wednesday, January 29. In Chinese culture, each year in a repeating 12-year cycle is assigned an animal—a sign of inextricable connection, both physical and spiritual.
